Joshua 1:1-11 Lectio Divina (Lectio in Groups)
Preparation: As you prepare to read these verses, consider reading Deuteronomy 31, where the Lord speaks to Moses and Joshua (cf. Don’t Be Afraid, Lesson 7).
The Israelites have been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. Their leader through this period, Moses, has just died. Joshua has been chosen by God and Moses to lead the people of Israel into the promised land. This is the beginning of their journey.
Lectio: Read Joshua 1:1-11. As you read through these words a second time, highlight the words or phrases that stand out to you.
Meditatio: Repeat these words or phrases to yourself or aloud. Close your eyes and allow the words to become a part of you. To what in your life do they speak? What do you hear in these words: Comfort? Strength? Courage? Motivation? Hope? Something else?
Oratio: Use the words that speak to you as a prayer. As you pray, allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your spirit. Seek guidance in your leadership responsibilities. Consider the questions below as you pray.
Contemplatio: Silently, in the presence of God, open your mind to the possibilities that these verses present to your situation.
- Where do you lack courage?
- Where do you need strength?
- Have you turned to the right or the left (away from the word of God?
- In whom or what do you place your hope?
- What action might these words prompt you to take?
Record your thoughts and reflections in your journal.
