Study for Easter Sunday – JOHN 20:1-19

As you spend time celebrating the resurrection of our Lord, consider reading the story of Easter from another perspective.  Spend some time pondering these familiar words and reflecting on the impact of this event on your life.

Connect to our Lord who gave his life because of his love for us. Splurge a few minutes to slowly breathe and be fully present in the space where you are.  Allow your muscles to relax so that you are open to receive what the Lord wants to teach you through the Word.

You are encouraged to read through the entire exercise first so that you know how it proceeds.  Record your observations, imagining the scene and asking questions in your journal.  It is as we write down our thoughts and ideas that they become clearer to us, as well as allowing our minds to be open to God’s Word.

  • Note that you will be reading the passage at least 4 times.
  • You may have more questions than answers; this is beneficial as the questions lead us deeper into the text.
  • Focus first on observing what happened.  Then enter into each character, imagining their experience.
  • Finally, allow the Holy Spirit to apply this passage in your life and community.

Read the John 20:1-19 slowly imagining yourself as a bird in a tree beside the tomb, watching the scene play out below.  In your journal, record your first impressions of what you observed take place.  Note the questions that arise in your mind.

Read the passage through the eyes of Peter and the other disciple.  Record what strikes you.  Imagine the emotions of these two men.  Observe how they were impacted.  (Include v.18.)  What do you wonder about?

Read the passage through the experience of Mary Magdalene.  Record what strikes you.  Imagine her emotions in each occurrence.  Notice how she was impacted.  What do you wonder about?

Read the passage through the perspective of Jesus. Record what strikes you. Imagine his emotions.  What do you wonder about?

Savor your encounter with God and his truth.  Allow the Holy Spirit to apply this passage in your life and community.
