Romans 13:7-14 Lectio Divina (Lectio in Groups)
LECTIO: Read Romans 13:7-14.
MEDITATIO:
Reread verses 7-8. According to these verses, what are the things we owe others?
- Make a list of the people you owe and what you owe them.
- Focus particularly on respect and honor. What might it look like to owe respect and honor?
- Name the relationships in which you might owe respect and honor. Where could you improve in “paying” these debts?
- Write down your thoughts.
Read verses 8-10. What do these verses say about love?
- What particular words or phrases stand out to you?
- Reflect on their significance, especially in the relationships you considered above.
Focus your attention on verses 12-14.
- What is the relationship between night and day, darkness and light?
- What do these images bring to mind?
- How do they speak into your life and relationships?
- What darkness castes shadows into your life?
- What would it look like for you to put on the armor of light?
- How would it affect your relationships?
ORATIO: Consider a few of the key relationships in your life. As you reflect on the questions above, pray for wisdom and guidance in sorting out the answers. Ask God to make clear to you where you owe more honor and respect; what areas you need to bring into the light of God’s grace, and how you can more effectively live into God’s love.
CONTEMPLATIO: Reflect on the following questions:
- What does it mean to clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ? (cf. Galatians 5, Ephesians 4, and Colossians 3 for more on this).
- What do you need to put on to become more like Christ?
- How does clothing yourself with Christ help you in the battle against the desires of the flesh?
- How does it change how you do relationships?
